March 3, 2011 - Digital Stories 2

Today we learned about copyright.

This was kind of an eye-opener for me because I did not realize how strict copyright laws were! I knew you couldn't compy pictures and videos and music from the internet but I didn't realize that you aren't even supposed to lend movies or watch them with a large group of people! To be honest, I think it is slightly ridiculous. I am glad I learned though.

This will influence what media I can use in my classroom and how I use it. I now know the acceptable use of copyrighted material and what "fair use" is. This will be very beneficial when I start teaching because it will keep me from getting in trouble.

February 24, 2011 - Digital Stories 1

Today we learned about Digital Stories.

While I was in elementary school, we never really used digital stories so I didn't realize just how cool they could be. The Holocaust Digital Story really struck me. I think that the combination of music and pictures in that story were impeccably done. It really showed that a digital story can emotionally affect a person.

I think these will be very useful in my class to teach important events or subjects, like the Holocaust for example. I think that, as long as the pictures are not copyrighted, it is a very easy but blunt way to put a point across about a gramatic event. I love it!

February 17 - Vidcast Reflection Paper

We had a wonderful time recording our vidcast. In a few of our classes this semester, we have talked about getting kids active in the classroom. When kids are sitting for a long time, they start to get restless. So, we found that creating a quick exercise video helps the kids get their wiggles out and it also connects the PE core. All students need to be active so this is a great way to do it for 5 minutes in the classroom! Thus, we created "Awesome Classroom Workout!" As part of every grade core, being active and getting exercise is an importanat part of health and physical education.

As we thought about what would be best to do for our vidcast, we thought that exercise was a great idea! Even as we were filming it, we got a little worn out! It's an awesome activity for kids to get them moving and to get them to calm down a little bit.

A potential drawback of this vidcast could be that it could get students hyped up and you would then have to spend time calming them down. That is why at the end of the video, we tell the students to get a drink and sit back down in their seats. This way the students are still listening to the video and getting instructions.

I think if we were to make another vidcast, we would continue to do classroom workouts. Just with this one video, we had a hard time deciding which classroom exercises we would do. SO, we would creat a new video with different workouts that get your blood pumping!

Vidcasts - February 10, 2011

Today we learned how to make vidcasts and how to use other fancy programs.

Right now, this doesn't really apply to me. I really enjoy learning how to use Jing and Photo Story, but I don't think that I will really be able to use this until later in my life. Right now, I don't take videos very often and if I do, they are only for my own enjoyment, so I don't really need to make fancy videos out of them.

Jing will be a very useful tool if I ever have to do a tutorial for my class or if I need to do a how-to video. Photo Story will be fun to use if I ever want to make a class slide show or something like that. These tools will be very useful when I begin my teaching career.
